But after they make love in a park and Steve gives her the boot, Sally learns she’s pregnant, checks into a home for unwed mothers, and is forced to give up the child. Distraught and wandering the streets in a daze, Sally sees someone else’s baby in a carriage and decides to “adopt” it. Originally released in 1949 as Not Wanted, this marked actress Ida Lupino’s (uncredited) directorial debut when she took over from ailing Elmer Clifton (Assassin of Youth). Though eschewing the trappings of exploitation for a more sensitive approach, the film was nevertheless revamped by roadshow promoter Jack Lake who changed the title to The Wrong Rut, spliced in some color birth-of-a-baby footage, and had Miss Lupino’s surgically altered feature playing drive-ins from 1962 through 1972!!!

Plus: Chicken farmer John Lloyd learns the importance of blood tests when he gives his pregnant wife a dose of the clap after a one-night fling with a lonely waitress. Shot in Harmony, Georgia, with a cast of non-professionals and produced in association with the Georgia Department of Health, Birthright originally began as a serious educational film but took a detour into degradation when it was theatrically released with the insertion of a crude nude scene and, yup, more birth-of-a-baby footage!

Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential) and Joe Pantoliano (The Matrix) shine in this absolute stunner of a movie. Memento combines a bold, mind-bending script with compelling action and virtuoso performances. Pearce plays Leonard Shelby, hunting down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The problem is that “the incident” that robbed Leonard of his wife also stole his ability to make new memories. Unable to retain a location, a face, or a new clu on his own, Leonard continus his search with the help of notes, Polaroids, and even homemade tattoos for vital information.

Because of his condition, Leonard essentially lives his life in short, present-tense segments, with no clear idea of what’s just happened to him. That’s where Memento gets really interesting; the story begins at the end, and the movie jumps backward in 10-minute segments. The suspense of the movie lies not in discovering what happens, but in finding out why it happened. Amazingly, the movie achieves edge-of-your-seat excitement even as it moves backward in time, and it keeps the mind hopping as cause and effect are pieced together.

Pearce captures Leonard perfectly, conveying both the tragic romance of his qust and his wry humor in dealing with his condition. He is bolstered by several excellent supporting players, and the movie is all but stolen from him by Pantoliano, who delivers an amazing performance as Teddy, the guy who may or may not be on his side. Memento has an intriguing structure and even meditations on the nature of perception and meaning of life if you go looking for them, but it also functions just as well as a completely absorbing thriller. It’s rare to find a movie this exciting with so much intelligence behind it. –Ali Davis

The staggeringly athletic bodies of the two lead s are a constant source of visual spectacle in The Gymnast. Fortunately, the movie also has a solid story to offer: Jane Hawkins (Dreya Weber, Lovely and Amazing) has lost all pleasure in her life: Her gymnastics career collapsed twenty years earlier du to an injury, her marriage has turned sour, and her job as a massage therapist has become a rut. When she gets invited to put together an aerial act using long strips of cloth instead of trapezes, Jane finds herself revitalized–and surprisingly drawn to her acrobatic partner, Serena (dancer Addie Yungmee). The tentative romance between the two is sultry and, thanks to their aerial routines, visually captivating. The Gymnast occasionally stumbles with some obvious dialogu and unpolished acting moments, but it’s a strong coming-out story that gives texture and depth to its characters. The character’s physical prowess ultimately becomes a metaphor for their emotional strength, but the movie also serves as a celebration of female athleticism. Weber and Yungmee’s bodies are assertively sexy, expressing as much power as eroticism. It’s easy to see why The Gymnast has won an abundance of awards at gay and lesbian film festivals. –Bret Fetzer

The magic scene sure has changed since Merlin’s day. If writer-director Jon Jacobs’s Lucinda’s Spell is any gauge, modern spell casters are the equivalent of grunge rockers, hipsters doing their own thing on the fringes of society. Set in New Orleans, the drama covers the days before the Eve of Beltrane, and Jason (Jacobs), the last in Merlin’s bloodline, must choose the mother of his child during a spell casting contest. Bottle blonde Jason slinks and glowers and poses his way through New Orleans as he hunts for his son, born of a one-night stand five years before, but the picture is all but stolen by Christina Fulton as Lucinda, the New Orleans “sex witch” who just happens to be the mother of his child. With more costume changes than Cher and more characters in her closet than Tracey Ullman, Lucinda plays everybody’s fantasy with a breathless vitality, sliding from one persona to the next without losing her essential spark. A modest but colorful production, it never succumbs to the sexploitation one would expect with the tag line “sex is magic,” though the smoke-and-mirrors, demon-conjuring climax does suggest a B movie version of Kenneth Anger imagery: sexual but not particularly sexy. Like many an American indie production, there’s more conversation than spectacle, but it’s a charming production centered on a spirited performance by Fulton, an actress on the verge of a breakthrough. –Sean Axmaker
